Deaths from Illegal Version Fentanyl

More than 1,000 people died over two years from an illegal version of the painkiller fentanyl, the government reported Thursday in its first national tally of those deaths.

The Dallas Morning News reported, the spike of overdoses seems to have ended, health officials said, pointing to law enforcement's shutdown of a fentanyl operation in Mexico in 2006.

The wave of fentanyl overdoses first came to light in Chicago in 2005, and by 2006 more clusters were identified in Philadelphia, Detroit and other cities.

Hundreds of deaths from the drug were gradually reported, often episodically in local newspapers. Thursday's report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts the toll at 1,013 deaths from early April 2005 through late March 2007.

"This was really an epidemic," said Dr. Steven Marcus, the executive director of New Jersey's poison control center and a co-author of the new report.

Some deaths from illegal fentanyl still occur, but the worst of the outbreak seems to have ended after authorities shut down a fentanyl-making operation in Toluca, Mexico, in May 2006, said Dr. T. Stephen Jones, the study's lead author.

"It almost disappeared entirely. The shutting down of the Toluca facility was probably a major factor," said Jones, a consultant retired from the CDC.

The new report is being published this week in a CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Fentanyl is a prescription painkiller, often prescribed for cancer patients and administered through a patch. But it also is a powerful, euphoria-inducing narcotic, 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin.

Illegally made versions of the drug are sold as a powder, often mixed with cocaine or heroin, and sometimes used as a heroin replacement. It's possible some heroin addicts are unaware fentanyl is part of their injection, some experts say.

The San Antonio News reported, witnesses told police the motorcyclist was weaving through traffic by driving in between lanes, when he lost control in front of the truck at Loop 1604 and La Cantera Parkway at 10 a.m.

Police said there was not much the driver could do to avoid the motorcycle.

"The motorcycle just got under him," said Sgt. Greg Brooks of the San Antonio Police Department. "There was nothing he could do to avoid it."

Despite the crash, the motorcycle barely had a scratch.

The eastbound lanes of Loop 1604 were closed from Hausman Road to Interstate 10 while the crash was cleaned up.

The child was taken to University Hospital with minor injuries.

Witnesses say the injuries were a hard thing for them to see.

The man was riding a 2005 Harley Davidson Road King eastbound on Trinity Boulevard when he lost control and crashed into a sign and median in the center of the road, Henderson said.

The driver refused to stop, but eventually lost control and slammed into the Foot Locker store on Walzem.

According to deputies, the teenage driver was trapped inside the mangled SUV and emergency crews had to rescue him. Deputies say the passenger tried to run.

"We do have one passenger, appears to be a young teen, in custody," said Lt. Martin Molina. "He fled from the scene on foot and was apprehended near Windcrest."

Three - Vehicle Wreck in Fort Worth

Officials have released the name of the man who died Friday in fiery three-vehicle wreck on westbound NE Loop 820 in northwest Fort Worth.

The Fort Worth News reported, Jason Powell, 25, was identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

Public records show that he was married, a resident of Flower Mound and a licensed pilot.

Powell died Friday afternoon when his four-door Nissan was sandwiched between a tanker truck that was stopped in a traffic jam on the loop and an oncoming concrete truck, which was out of control, police said.

The car was squeezed out of the wreckage, but Powell died instantly, police said.

Flames engulfed both trucks, but the drivers got out and were taken to Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital.

The accident was still under investigation last week, but police said investigators were checking to see if the driver of the concrete truck was negligent. If so, he could be charged with criminally negligent homicide, police said.

Children Injured in Tuesday Night Crash

A 10-year-old boy and a teenage girl were injured Tuesday night reported The San Antonio News, when they were thrown off the hood of a car downtown.

The boy was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center with serious head trauma and the teen was treated at the scene, police said.

The boy's mother, who police said was driving the car, was charged with injury to a child.

Police said the woman was driving while the two were riding on the hood of the vehicle when she hit the brakes at the intersection of Olive and Center. The victims then rolled onto the street.

It wasn't clear how fast the woman was driving, but police suspect she only drove about 20 or 30 yards before she stopped.

"It seems ludicrous that anybody would do that," said Sgt. Marcus Booth of the San Antonio Police Department. "There's plenty of room in the car, so we don't know why she did it. It really looks like poor judgment."

Police don't suspect the woman was drinking alcohol at the time of the incident.
