Woman Killed Crossing Path of Railway Express
A woman was killed and a man was critically injured Tuesday afternoon when the man steered his car around the lowered railroad-crossing arms into the path of the Trinity Railway Express, which struck the car just east of downtown, authorities reported.
A girl believed to be 2 or 3 years old was taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center with minor injuries, police said. Witnesses told police that the toddler was strapped in a child seat in the rear of the vehicle.
The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office identified the dead woman as Rachel Sumberlin, 21, of Fort Worth.
The Fort Worth News reports, there are two separate railroad crossings with two sets of crossing arms — one on Galvez Avenue and another on Riverside Drive — a few feet away from the Galvez and Riverside intersection. Regional authorities recommended closing the Galvez Avenue crossing years ago and improving the Riverside Drive crossing so trains could travel more quietly and more safely through the city.
Authorities reopened the tracks around 9 p.m. Tuesday after their investigation.
