A 46-year-old man died on the last day of this year’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo when he fell from a roller coaster, the HiMiler. Despite the on-the-scene efforts of emergency medical personnel, the man died in a Houston-area hospital soon after the accident. Dethroned Miss San Antonio, Dominique Ramirez, appeared in court last week in a lawsuit she hopes will restore her status as beauty royalty – and give her the opportunity to compete for Miss America.

Texas legislators currently meeting in Austin are considering several variations on the same theme: Texas law should forbid texting while driving. In fact, the only real debate it seems is whether the definition of “texting” should include reading emails on a cell phone. Senate Bill 119 and House Bill 103, for instance, prohibit reading, writing or sending text messages while driving; the more expansive Senate Bill 46 and House Bill 243 target phone-based text communication and specifically include emails.

After a pitched, five year battle, TexCom Gulf Disposal LLC still hopes to open an injection well near a Conroe residential community. According to the plan, the well would bury nonhazardous, liquid commercial waste thousands of feet below the surface.

However, some members of the community worry that the waste could include benezine and other hazardous chemicals. Moreover, given Conroe’s history of oil exploration – and seams left in the ground from improperly plugged 1930s era drilling – the possibility exists in the minds of some EPA officials that injected waste could seep into the municipal water supply through these underground seams.

Regardless of local and EPA concerns, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) approved the permit for TexCom’s injection well. This approval came in spite of problems with similar waste disposal wells in Winona, Texas, in 1997 and Chico, Texas, in 2005. The next stop for this expensive and potentially injurious conflict are the courts.

 Last week, a kitchen fire at Jackie’s Child Care, a home day-care center, became dangerous and deadly, killing three children and injuring four. At least two of the injured children remain in critical condition, fighting for their lives.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has just initiated it investigation, but already information has emerged that Jackie’s Child Care was in violation of state law. A Fort Worth teacher, Brenda Jones Stafford now faces a felony charge of injury to the elderly after she allegedly choked and pushed a 71-year-old woman and, when her 73-year-old husband attempted to intervene, shoved, hit and choked him, too.
