High School Basketball Player Dies after Game

Robert Garza, a junior at Roma High School in South Texas, collapsed during a club team basketball game, moments after drinking water and celebrating with a team member. The 16-year-old was taken to Brackenridge Hospital where he was pronounced dead less than an hour after his unexpected collapse.

The unexpected, untimely and tragic death of Robert Garza marks yet another death in amateur sports. In recent years, football and basketball players have died during practices and games with concerning frequency. Some experts worry that overly strenuous workouts and seasons could be part of the cause.
