Rain, Negligent Driving Contribute to Dangerous 18-Wheeler Accident

Poor visibility and slick roads contributed to a massive – and potentially serious – 18-wheeler accident in Dallas over the Thanksgiving weekend. The 18-wheeler driver lost control of his big rig, slid off an overpass, and fell 20 feet, causing considerable destruction to a heavily trafficked bridge. An overpass collapse would have caused unprecedented delays, damage, and injury.

Were wet conditions and poor visibility the only causal factors in this accident? No way. The reality is that driving conditions are never perfect; all drivers must take appropriate measures in light of highway risks. In Saturday’s accident, it’s clear that the truck driver failed to take appropriate precautions – and as a result, thousands of Dallas drivers might have suffered.

After many years and more clients than I can remember, I’ve learned more than a few things about 18-wheeler accidents and the drivers and trucking companies that cause them. Despite federal and state laws that clearly outline safety requirements, some members of the trucking industry simple refuse to conduct business safely. By skirting statutory mandates, they gain a few extra dollars – and put the lives and livelihood of thousands of Texas families at risk.
