SUV Roll Kills Yet Another Dallas Driver

Just one day after Christmas, a Dallas family was forced to confront the tragedy of losing a loved one. The experience is made all the more painful by knowing that a dangerous product design may have contributed significantly to the fatality.

Attempting to avert a road obstruction, Ethel Hazet swerved while travelling on Loop 12 near Interstate 35. In doing so, Hazet inadvertently struck a concrete barrier, causing her Chevy Tahoe to roll several times, throwing her from the car. Although her passenger was able to survive the accident, Hazet died from serious internal injuries.

Traditionally, SUVs have infamously high rollover risk. In fact, according to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the probability that an SUV will rollover is as much as five times more likely than that of a passenger vehicle in similar conditions.

Why is rollover risk important? Drivers and passengers are far more likely to suffer serious – and often lethal – injury in the event of a rollover. NHTSA data has shown that the probability of serious injury and death is 36 percent higher in the event of a rollover and that more than 80 percent of annual vehicle occupant deaths occurred in single car rollover crashes.

For the legal team at Fears | Nachawati, these statistics leave us asking one simple question: why? While driver error and highway conditions play a part, the reality is that driving an SUV is considerably more dangerous because car makers insufficiently took into consideration the probability of rollovers – and the probable outcome of rollovers.
