18-Wheeler's Negligence Costs Public Servant Arm
Kimberly Huckabee is one of the latest victims of a commercial trucking industry that puts profits ahead of the safety of other drivers and the firefighters, police, and EMTs who respond to accidents.
In the early hours of Thanksgiving Day, Huckabee, a volunteer firefighter in Pinewood, Texas, responded to the scene of a violent 18-wheeler accident. The accident occurred when the truck driver fell asleep behind the wheel, lost control of the big rig, and ran off the road. The 18-wheeler, a fuel tanker that was carrying nearly 7,000 gallons of crude oil, burst into flames when it careened off the side of the road. Additionally, the massive, fiery wreck caused a domino effect of other car accidents as drivers took evasive action.
Soon after arriving at the scene, Huckabee set to work helping accident victims and fighting the raging oil fire. Tragically, while doing so, she was struck by an 18-wheeler passing by her. As a result of the accident, medical personnel were forced to amputate Huckabee’s arm, a painful reminder of the dangers of reckless commercial truck drivers and the risk-prone environment trucking companies often foster.

Two 18-wheeler accidents at the same crash site isn’t an isolated event. Accidents such as the one that took Kimberly Huckabee’s arm are the product of a commercial transportation industry that values profits over people. At the direction of hard-charging managers, drivers routinely drive longer hours than they should – or than state law allows. The result isn’t simply a sleepy driver, but a dangerous situation.
