On Monday, August 26, 2013, 30-year-old Sebastian Sanchez was fatally injured while working on a construction site at the campus of Texas Christian University, when a chimney fell on him. The accident occurred during the demolition of a property, located at 3014 Lubbock Avenue. Sanchez was transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, where he died on Tuesday at approximately 1:30 a.m. Below is a map regarding the location where the construction accident occurred:
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the 4,206 employee fatalities that occurred in the private industry in 2010, 774 (18.7%) alone were in construction. The leading cause of death of workers in the construction industry were falls, followed by electrocution, struck by an object, and caught in/between. These “Fatal Four” were responsible for approximately three out of five (56%) construction laborer deaths in 2010.
In an on-the-job fatality such as the one mentioned above, it is important that the family of the deceased victim demand an investigation of this accident from the company in which Sanchez was employed, as well as file a civil claim for the wrongful death of their loved one. A thorough investigation into the accident will better identify who exactly was at-fault for the fatal injuries Sanchez sustained, as well as determine if, or which, of the company’s safety standards and the U.S. Department of Labor’s OSHA regulations were violated at the time of the accident. It is important for the victim and/or the victim’s family to consult in an attorney in an on-the-job accident, to ensure that every detail of the accident is analyzed, and to develop the best course of action that will yield the greatest amount of compensation for damages and losses.
