According to the Texas Department of Safety, a Dodge pickup driven by Ramon Aguilar rear-ended a GMC pickup carrying five passengers on Sunday, September 29, 2013. After the initial impact, the GMC went off of the road and rolled into a ditch; killing 26-year-old Luis Valenzuela, 35-year-old Isabel Garcia-De La Cerda, 39-year-old Romulo Molina, 31-year-old Juan Carlos Enriquez Mendoza, and 31-year-old David Dominguez-Juarez. The Dodge driven by Aguilar also rolled into the ditch and severely injured passenger Ramero Aguilar, who was airlifted to an area hospital. After the crash, Ramon Aguilar attempted to flee the scene on foot but was later caught by police and arrested. It is believed by officials that alcohol played a factor in the incident. Below is a map depicting the area where the accident occurred:
While Ramon Aguilar will inevitably receive criminal charges for fleeing the scene of an accident, as well as possible multiple vehicular manslaughter charges and a potential DWI charge, it is important that the family members of the deceased victims pursue civil claims against Aguilar as well. Because of one man’s irresponsible and negligent driving, there are now five different families mourning the loss of their daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, and parents. The fact that Aguilar proceeded to flee the scene of the accident only adds insult to injury for the families now grieving the loss of their loved ones. While filing a civil claim will not bring back their lost family members, it would help cover the costs of final expenses and ensure that the vicitms’ families are not burdened with paying out-of-pocket for these sudden, unexpected bills.
