Amarillo Man Dies in Off-Road Accident

While it’s true that most Texas automobile accidents happen on the highway, off-roading can be dangerous. Tragically, last weekend an Amarillo family found out that off-road driving is sometimes fatal.

Kelly Bain and Randall Scott Rogers were travelling in a Polaris ATV on a ranch in the Texas panhandle on Saturday, tending deer, checking traps, and not thinking about the risks of off-road driving. Unfortunately, Bain, the driver, took a sharp turn and lost control of the ATV. Rogers, Bain’s passenger, was thrown from the vehicle and moments later, the vehicle landed on top of him, crushing him under its weight. Although Rogers was transported to a nearby hospital, his injuries killed him.

Two Die in Fatal Houston Crash

A car accident in southwest Houston claimed the lives of a driver and his passenger this weekend. The driver lost control of his speeding Chevrolet Camaro, then jumped a curb and slammed into a light pole and a brick wall. The force of the collision was overwhelming, throwing the driver from the vehicle and killing the passenger.

This tragic accident is horrible for the families of both victims, but it is particularly difficult for the passenger’s loved ones. The passenger didn’t have control over the car and didn’t have the ability to influence the outcome of the fatal accident. Under Texas law, the driver is not only responsible for his own safety, but her safety, too.

Fatal Rear-End Accident on Houston Freeway

Rear-end accidents aren’t usually fatal. Yesterday’s two-car accident between a Ford F-250 and an SUV ended tragically, however, because of common problem with SUVs: rolling. During afternoon rush hour traffic, the F-250 slammed into the back of the SUV. Although forceful, the initial collision wasn’t fatal. The accident, however, forced the SUV off the road and down the embankment, causing the vehicle to roll several times. As the SUV rolled, the driver was thrown from the car, killing him.

Fatal Accident on Texas Hill Country Backroads

The intersection of FM 1101 and FM 306 near New Braunfels, Texas, was the scene of a fatal car accident Friday night when the driver of a Honda Civic broadsided a GMC Yukon. The late night wreck occurred when the teenager driving the Honda Civic rolled through the intersection. The “t-boned” Yukon became impossible to control, rolling and throwing the driver from the car. Friday night’s accident underscores important realities: SUVs aren’t always safer than cars, and a roll is often fatal.

Six Boy Scouts Injured in Heart Attack-Related Accident

Somewhere on Interstate 10 outside of Kerrville, Texas, a Boy Scout troop leader had a fatal heart attack while driving six Boy Scouts home from summer camp. The heart attack caused the driver to lose control of his SUV and veer off the road. Although all six boys were sent to the hospital, fortunately, all escaped serious injury. One passenger, however, did sustain a broken wrist and required longer care in a nearby hospital.

What kind of liability do Boy Scout leaders, soccer coaches, and Y-Guides parents have when they take responsibility for your children? If your children are in an accident while their under another parent’s care, who is responsible for the hospital bills? These are simple but important questions.
