Common car accident injuries

Even a seemingly minor car accident can lead to severe injuries. While there are any number of ways a person can be hurt in a car accident, there are certain injuries that are the most common. These include:

Traumatic brain injury: Traumatic brain injuries occur when the victim’s brain is damaged or impaired due to a blow to the head. Traumatic brain injuries are more common in side impact car accidents than other types of motor vehicle collisions. Symptoms of a traumatic brain injury include headaches, dizziness, memory loss and seizures.

Spinal injury: More than half of all spinal cord injuries are the result of car accidents. Depending on the severity of the damage, a spinal cord injury can lead to temporary or permanent paralysis.

Back injury: A car accident can also result in damage to the discs that run down your spinal cord. Side-effects of a disc injury include numbness, weakness in the limbs and even paralysis. A second type of back injury commonly suffered in car accidents is a lower back sprain.

Whiplash: Whiplash is the most common of all car accident injuries. The victim’s head is forced violently forward and then backwards. Whiplash can result in damage to the nerves, muscles and joints of the neck.

Other types of common car accident injuries include:

  • Pinched nerves
  • Lacerations
  • Fractures
  • Bruising
  • Strained muscles
  • Scrapes
  • Dislocated arm, shoulder, leg or knee

What is aggressive driving?

Road rage is a term that we’re all familiar with – but what exactly is road rage, or, as it is often called, “aggressive driving?”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines aggressive driving as “the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property.”

Actions that constitute aggressive driving include:

  • Tailgating
  • Speeding
  • Passing a vehicle on the right
  • Failing to obey traffic signals and road signs
  • Failing to yield to the right of way
  • Flashing your headlights
  • Intentionally blocking other vehicles
  • Unsafe lane changes

Unfortunately, aggressive driving is all too common, and aggressive drivers are responsible for a large percentage of all car accidents. There are, however, steps you can take to protect yourself from aggressive driving:

  • Allow the driver to pass you
  • Maintain the speed limit and stay calm
  • Do not retaliate or provoke the aggressive driver
  • Avoid eye contact
  • Do not make offensive gestures
  • Report the aggressive driver to the police

Guard Humvee goes airborne causing fatal six-vehicle accident

Three people are dead after a six-vehicle accident involving a National Guard Humvee. Wednesday morning, a National Guard Humvee traveling on I-35 near Troy, Texas, went airborne and flew over a concrete median.

The Humvee was being driver by a 21-year-old soldier named Altha Gibson. For reasons that remain unclear, Gibson drifted off the road and then recrossed both southbound lanes on I-35 before vaulting over the median.

The Humvee then struck a Toyota Corolla traveling in a northbound lane, killing the driver, 41-year-old Douglas Ashcroft. The Humvee remained airborne after hitting the Corolla and struck the cab of an 18-wheeler, killing its driver as well, 44-year-old Donald Johnson.

The Humvee finally came to a stop after landing upside down in the middle of the interstate. However, the chain reaction it set into motion was not over.

After being struck, the 18-wheeler jackknifed, hitting an unoccupied truck parked on the shoulder of the road along with the SUV it was towing. A trash compactor truck then crashed into the 18-wheeler. The driver of the trash compactor was not injured.

Gibson, the driver of the Humvee, was killed in the accident. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Why Handling Your Own Personal Injury Claim is a Terrible Idea

Potential clients involved in an accident or injury claim that seek legal help or free advice from my law firm frequently ask this question--If I hire a lawyer and have to pay attorneys' fees, won't I end up getting less money in the end?

Nothing is guaranteed--however, I cannot remember a time when I had a client who, at first, was handling a claim on their own or was just about to settle with the insurance when they came to me with many questions and reservations about hiring a lawyer.  They trusted our law firm, and it proved to be worth it in the end.

A couple of questions should come to your mind (1) if you were in need of surgery, would you try to do the surgery yourself ? , (2) do you really have what it takes to take on Big Insurance and an insurance claims adjuster who handles thousands of claims a year?

Remember, the insurance adjuster is not under oath when they are dealing with you and they are frequently trained to do absolutely everything in their power to deny your injury claim or pay you as little as possible.  If you are thinking if it does not work out, I can always hire a lawyer later--think again. Commonly, people come in after trying to handle their injury claim with the "do it yourself" approach by giving the insurance company a statement unfavorable to their claim and missing crucial damages they are entitled to under the law.

If you have an injury lawyer or law firm who works your claim diligently and aggressively, your decision to hire a lawyer is more often than not worth the time.  While most people are concerned about their property damage, I remind potential clients that vehicles can always be replaced, but you only get one body during your lifetime, if you do not look out for your health, who will?

Abraham Lincoln once said, "A man who represents himself has a fool for a client."  If you have legal questions or need help or need legal advice with your personal injury claim, feel free to email or call me - mn@fnlawfirm.com or 1.866.705-7584.
