An unfortunate accident took the life of a recent high school graduate in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on Tuesday. The victim, identified as 18-year-old Meredith Demko, was driving to her friend’s home when Thomas Gallagher, 29, crashed into her Toyota Prius when he swerved into her lane. According to police records, Gallagher was speeding and weaving in traffic when he crashed into Demko. He was also driving with two others in his car who had asked him to stop and be let out of his car out of fear of getting hurt by his reckless driving.

Gallagher has been charged with causing an accident involving a death or injury while not properly licensed, driving with a suspended or revoked license and disregarding traffic lanes. He has two prior DUI convictions on his record and authorities have suggested that alcohol may have been a factor in this accident, although that has yet to be determined. He is currently being held in Lancaster County Prison on $250,000 bail.

Demko would have attended Ursinus College in the fall. She is survived by her parents and two older siblings.
